Experience Mapping

What does it mean to have an experience within a place, and how might we map that experience within the context of its physical location? For this assignment, we began by drawing a straight line (see dashed blue line) across campus, and attempt to follow that line as closely as possible on marked pathways (see dotted black line). Having done the walk multiple times, we then began capturing and illustrating our experiences on the map. I completed most instances of my walk at night, and thus the campus lights, and my lines of sight became an incredibly important part of my experience.

*White arcs denote lines of sight; the time spent looking in that direction, and the theoretical distance that could be seen in that given direction.

*Transparent circles denote lights; their position, height, color, and relative intensity on the ground.

*Blue cross hatch area denotes feelings of belonging as a pedestrian; the line narrows during times of discomfort, and widens at times of security.

* Map boundary denotes what could have been theoretically seen from my walking path, but not necessarily what I was looking at.
